A consultant for the UK government said that nCoV will "last forever in one form or another".

Therefore, according to Mark Walport, a member of the UK's Sage Science Advisory Group (SAGE), people need to be vaccinated regularly.

Walport's comments came after the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Aug. 21 expressed hope that Covid-19 would end within two years, like a pandemic.

The dense population and higher mobility mean the virus is easier to spread, Walport said.

In an interview with the BBC's "Today" program, Walport emphasized that controlling the "global vaccination" epidemic is a mandatory requirement, but nCoV is not like chickenpox, the disease can be eradicated with vaccines.

"This is a virus that will last forever for us, just in one form or another, and it is almost certain that we will have to be vaccinated many times," he added.

Walport also warned nCoV is likely to "break out" again, but said that governments can now use more targeted controls instead of mass blockades.

Covid-19 has appeared in 213 countries and territories, causing more than 23 million people to become infected and nearly 808,000 deaths.
