Chinese government advisers said the country would "diversify" foreign relations to develop in the context of increasingly hostile US.

"We need to have dialogue and fight with Americans at the same time. We should not put all our eggs in one basket. We will diversify international cooperation and industrial supply chains. The faster the United States seeks to separate," he said.

Cai said the main goal of China after Covid-19 was to maintain its role in the global supply chain, especially since Washington has been increasingly tough in curbing the rise of Beijing, which he struck.

Cai's views seem to represent the growing consensus among China's policymakers, that the US is becoming an enemy and China must reduce its dependence.

Mr. Cai said that in the new international context, Chinese policies will focus more on promoting domestic companies and products, creating competitiveness in the global market.

China's 14th Five-Year Plan is also being drafted with the goal of increasing autonomy and reducing dependence on US technology.
