China, a company in Guangdong province, caused a controversy on social media when it rewarded two employees with a 2 million yuan flat for Tet.

Two employees of the company in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, this week were rewarded each with a new apartment, overlooking the lake, worth two million yuan (US $ 287,000).

Internet users have expressed questions about why the two received such a great reward and are concerned that this will make the remaining employees in the company feel unfair.

The company said that it chose to reward the two employees with a big Tet not based on labor performance but on the circumstances. Both are migrant workers, leaving their children in the countryside for grandparents to go to the city to make a living. The company president added that the award is part of a long-term plan to support the difficult employees.

However, Chinese internet users are skeptical that the company's donation of expensive apartments is meant to get media attention and it is unclear whether or not they are actually in the house's name.

In 2018, a steel company in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province, China also attracted attention when spending 160 million yuan (over 25 million USD) to reward New Year for more than 5,000 officials and workers. Each person was awarded 32,000 yuan (more than 5,000 USD) and had to bring a sack to receive cash.
