Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, who led the country for three decades, died today in Cairo at the age of 91.

"This morning my father, President Mubarak, has passed away," Alaa Mubarak, his son, wrote on Twitter. Gen Mounir Thabet, the former president's brother-in-law, said the family was at the Galaa army hospital in Cairo, where Mubarak died, and the presidential office would hold a funeral.

Former President Mubarak has been ill for a long time and recently received intensive care. Egyptian state television said he died after undergoing surgery.

Mubarak came to power in 1981 after the assassination of the late President Anwar al-Sadat and remained in office for three decades. In 2011, he was ousted after a three-week protest that began on January 25, 2011.

Mubarak's "fall" occurred in the context of increasing outrage among the government, in part due to the rampant abuse of power by the police, followed by the alleged parliamentary election. in 2010.

Mubarak has been indicted on numerous charges after being ousted, including the deaths of protesters in 2011 and acts of corruption. After many years of court trials and proceedings, he was acquitted on most charges.

The former Egyptian president has escaped several assassinations, including one committed by Islamic militants in 1995 in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa.
