Supreme leader IS Baghdadi and his wife detonated the suicide bomb belt when they realized there was no way out, according to a US official.

Delta team members of the US Special Forces Command Command on October 26 conducted a top-secret operation into a complex in the village of Barisha in Idlib province, northwestern Syria, where the Supreme Leader of the Islamic State (IS) ) proclaimed himself Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi residing with his family, according to a US military official.

A gunfight occurred between the two sides. When he realized that there was no way out, Baghdadi and his wife detonated the suicide bomb belt and died at the scene. According to Pentagon sources, no children were injured in the raid.

The campaign was approved by US President Donald Trump almost a week ago after the Delta team received intelligence that could be taken. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) helps locate IS leaders and the raid complex has been monitored for a while.

According to the official, the US special forces later raided the Baghdadi complex with their families to hide it from becoming a temple for the IS supreme leader. The official said the Pentagon informed the White House that it was "highly reliable" that Baghdadi had been killed, but needed further verification with AND and biometrics.

Turkey, a NATO member state, had no prior notice of this campaign. Meanwhile, two Iranian officials today said they were informed by officials in Syria that Baghdadi had died after arriving at the scene.

After the campaign ended, Trump tweeted: "Something really big happened." The White House then said the President would issue "an important announcement" at 9pm today (23:00 Hanoi time). The Pentagon and the US National Security Council have not commented on the information.

Baghdadi was born in Iraq, thought to be about 47-49 years old. He became the IS supreme leader in 2010 and led the group to gain vast territories in Iraq and Syria. In May 2014, Baghdadi announced the establishment of an Islamic state in Mosul, Iraq and that was his only public appearance.

US-backed militia forces in late March defeated ISIS at Baghouz stronghold in Syria, but failed to capture Baghdadi. The Supreme Leader IS and many of his trusted followers are believed to be hiding in desert areas on the border between Iraq and Syria.

In April, Baghdadi made its first appearance in five years in a video acknowledging the defeat in Syria, but insisted the group would not surrender and continue revenge for the killed militants. During a re-export in September, Baghdadi asked his subordinates to release ISIS members from the prison to continue their attacks in many countries and target the judges investigating members of the group.
