India recorded nearly 79,000 new nCoV infections yesterday, higher than the US record of 24-hour increase in cases in July.

India on August 30 found 78,761 more nCoV infections, higher than any other country since the outbreak of the pandemic, exceeding a record 77,638 new cases recorded by the US on July 17.

This 1.3 billion population country is currently the third largest epidemic region in the world, with more than 3.6 million cases, behind the US with 6.1 million cases and Brazil with nearly 3.9 million cases.

Speaking on the radio on August 30, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not comment on the new increase in cases, but urged people to comply with epidemic prevention measures.

"The important thing is that everyone is healthy and happy and together we completely defeat the nCoV," Modi said in Hindi.

Health experts warn that while increasing nCoV testing in recent months has been encouraging, India still needs to do more to better understand the scale of the pandemic in the country.

Indian authorities on Aug. 29 loosened restrictions on COV even as cases and deaths increase across the country.

The Ministry of the Interior claims to allow gatherings of up to 100 people for cultural, entertainment, sports and political events in the coming month, but masks and social stretch must be carried out.

The Indian government is also drawing criticism over its plans to hold entrance examinations to medical and technical colleges for about 2.4 million students next week.

In 213 countries and territories Covid-19 has appeared, after the outbreak in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, caused more than 25 million people to be infected, more than 850,000 people died and nearly 18 million people recovered.
