An additional 175 people died from nCoV in Italy in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,441.

The Italian Civil Protection Agency today released a statement saying the number of nCoV infections in the country was 21,157, an increase of 3,497 cases from the previous day. The number of deaths increased by 14%, from 1,266 to 1,441. Italy remains the second largest outbreak in the world after mainland China and the largest in Europe, with a mortality rate of 6.8%, compared to the global average of 3.7%.

Part of the reason for the high death rate is Italy's aging population, the majority of deaths from nCoV are 80 years of age or older with underlying disease. 1,966 patients recovered.

Italy from last week nationwide blockade to limit spread. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on March 14 gathered all night with trade unions and businesses to put in place a security process to protect Italians still working. Italy's Interior Ministry said as of March 13, more than 157,000 people were checked by the police and nearly 7,000 were facing penalties for failing to comply with travel restrictions.

Other European countries also began to take drastic measures to curb Covid-19. Spain blockaded the whole country, France closed unnecessary public places.

151 countries and territories recorded Covid-19, with more than 156,000 people infected, more than 5,800 deaths and more than 75,000 recovering.
