"Merkel believes that EU coordination on this issue is very important and she has not yet overcome the disagreements in the ruling coalition on Huawei," the source said.

Members of Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party are now divided over whether or not to support the Social Democratic Party (SPD) 's proposal to block Chinese conglomerate Huawei from supplying. 5G network in Germany or not. Merkel supports the strict security requirements for 5G networks.

During a meeting in March in Brussels, Belgium, EU leaders will discuss whether Huawei will join the European telecommunications network. German carriers are all Huawei customers and warn that if the government banned the Chinese tech giant, Germany could take years and billions of dollars to build 5G networks.
