Singapore's army successfully detonated a 50 kg bomb left over from World War II in a residential area.

The bomb was discovered earlier this month while workers excavated soil at a construction site. Many bombs have been found in Singapore so far, often at construction sites, but the bomb has made it more difficult, due to being in the middle of a residential area.

Singaporean soldiers said the bomb had a high explosive risk if moved to other places, forcing them to detonate on the spot. In order to destroy the bomb, authorities blocked many roads around the construction site, buses had to move to other roads, while boats were banned from traveling on a river section near the site of the bomb explosion.

Residents of more than 600 surrounding apartments were ordered to evacuate early in the morning for safety reasons. The nearby Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel temporarily requires guests staying in rooms near the bomb disposal area to move elsewhere.

The bomb was detonated, producing explosions and slight vibrations that could be felt from nearby areas.

Landmine expert of the Singapore military determined that the bomb was likely to be dropped by the aircraft during 1942-1945, during the Japanese occupation of Japan.
