Police arrested a suspect for posting a photo of a protester in Bangkok with a background of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The suspect was arrested by Thai police today after the photo went viral on social media. The photo, taken at a rally in Bangkok last weekend, showed a protester holding a billboard criticizing the "authoritarian" government, with the background behind a portrait of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

"The Facebook post with this photo is inappropriate, offending all Thais. No one can stand this," Digital Economy and Social Minister Buddhipongse Punnakanta announced on Facebook today.

Thousands of Thais took to the streets in Bangkok on December 14 to join the biggest protest since the 2014 coup. Protests by the New Future Party leader (FFP) Thanathorn Juangroongruang kit started. Protesters carried posters against the government and called for Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha to resign.

Minister Buddhipongse said he conducted the investigation before authorities arrested the suspect, but did not provide further details. It is unclear what the suspect will face and the investigation is still ongoing.

Thailand maintains strict military laws, in which those who offend the royal family can be fined 3-15 years in prison.

Thai authorities have also threatened to take legal action against billionaire Thanathorn and the FFP party for organizing protests without permission on December 14, but police today said no decision has been taken to prosecute them. Which is given.
