The final official name will be chosen by the International Commission on Virus Classification. The organization has submitted the proposed title to a scientific journal and is expected to be published in the next few days, according to the BBC.

Earlier, the new strain of coronary pneumonia (nCoV) pneumonia was called by the names of acute respiratory disease 2019-nCoV or 2019-nCoV or Wuhan corona virus. However, due to being too long or difficult to read, these names are less common with coronavirus (English for coronavirus), the common name for the group of viruses in the shape of a crown.

Naming for a viral illness is not a simple matter because it is not only related to science but also a social issue. In the past, the Spanish flu or Rift Valley fever has been criticized as a name that increases stigma towards the country and region where the outbreak occurred.

The outbreak of corona virus pneumonia occurred in Wuhan City in Hubei Province, China, then spread to 26 countries and territories. At least 813 people have died and more than 37,500 cases have been reported globally.
