Russia has long been a major supplier of oil to Belarus. However, Moscow will start adopting a new pricing policy in 2020, pushing up Belarus oil prices, which Minsk says is unfair.

The Belarusian government is looking for new sources of crude oil to replace Russia, but it is unclear whether it has a better option even after Moscow changes its prices.

In the past, Belarus has tried to import oil from Azerbaijan, Venezuela and Iran, however, Russian oil still proves price competitiveness.

During Pompeo's visit to Belarus, the two countries also agreed to resume the ambassador exchange after the diplomatic ritual was interrupted for 10 years. He emphasized that all actions taken by both sides were aimed at improving diplomatic relations between Washington and Minsk, not to harm Moscow.
