The remaining foreigners in Wuhan, including many international students, are living in fear of being stuck at the center of Covid-19.

"We want to go back. We can't stand it anymore," said Gaurab Pokhrel, a Nepalese international student among 200 people who has yet to be evacuated from Wuhan. He said the city was in short supply of food and that foreign students were "fighting" with locals at some of the shops that were opening.

Twenty-seven foreigners in China were infected with Covid-19 earlier this week, 22 of whom are in quarantine. Two people died, including an American and a Japanese. Many foreigners have fled the epidemic on government-controlled flights. Those who stayed were the unlucky group, forced to stay or were still waiting for the opportunity to escape here.

Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province, central China is the site of Covid-19. The epidemic has now spread to 31 provinces in mainland China and 26 countries and territories around the world, killing at least 1,369 people and more than 60,000 worldwide.

Ruqia Shaikh, a Pakistani graduate student stuck at Central South Central University of Economics and Law, said most of the university's students were detained in dormitories, only watching TV. The school provides students with necessities but at twice the usual price.

"We are tired of eating forever a food, boiled rice and vegetables. Our only physical activity is walking on the terrace, but even that puts us at risk," Shaikh said.

"Last week I went to Walmart. This is the first time I'm going out of my house in weeks. It's scary. Ever since I'm out, I count the days until I'm sure I'm not infected with the virus," she said. Pakistani girls say.

Shaikh added that many Pakistani students in Wuhan want to escape, but returning home also means other risks. "We were worried about how the government would treat us when we returned to Pakistan. Some students who came back told us that officials treated them very badly," she said. The Pakistani government says more than 500 international students are in Wuhan, but have not announced any plans to evacuate citizens.

Unlike many countries, Islamabad maintains flights to and from many Chinese cities. Pakistan's Ministry of Health guarantees that all passengers will receive medical screening when they land in the country.

Yemen also has no plans to evacuate 115 citizens at the center of Wuhan. Fahd al-Tawili, 31, a Yemeni at the Chinese University of Geosciences, is desperate. "Everyone was evacuated except us. The latest of the Sudanese people have also been evacuated," al-Tawili said. "When we got out, only a few shops were open and very crowded, we had to queue, waiting for a long time."

A 23-year-old Yemeni student at Huazhong University of Science and Technology said the students were living in "the horror of fear of infection".

Bangladesh last week evacuated 312 people, mostly students and is planning a second flight with 171 citizens. However, pilots of Bangladesh national airline Biman refused to fly for fear of infecting Covid-19.

"No crew wants to go there. The crews who go there don't want to go either," Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said last week. He said the Bangladesh government had planned to hire a Chinese flight to bring its citizens home, but so far has not been successful.

France left about a group of 30-50 people stuck in Wuhan after deploying three flights to bring citizens back home. Olivier Guyonvarch of the French Consulate General in Wuhan said some people wanted to return but Paris had no new plans.

China imposed an blockade on Wuhan, a city of 11 million people, from Jan. 23. At least 17 cities in Hubei with about 56 million people have also been ordered to blockade to prevent the spread of the disease.

Edwin Reese, from Australia, said his wife was studying in Wuhan. He advised her not to go out to minimize the risk of virus infection. "She should stay in school, they have a small garden with fruits and vegetables, everything they need. So why go out to take a risk? They're crazy if they do," he said.
