MexicoParticles battle gunfire with security forces on Culiacán streets after Ovidio Guzmán López, son of drug lord El Chapo, was arrested.

The masked men armed with heavy weapons on October 17 opened fire against security forces in the city of Culiacán, northwestern Mexico, amid rumors of Ovidio Guzmán López, son of drug lord El Chapo, former leader of the Sinaloa gang, arrested.

A video shared on social media shows the masked people sitting on a pickup truck with machine guns, patrolling the area. Another video also shows a gunman holding an assault rifle repeatedly firing at an unknown target.

Local media reported at least one main road out of the city, heading toward Mazatlán port, was blocked by long lines of burning trucks, while other roads were also blocked by the army.

The Sinaloa state government said it was "trying to restore order in the wake of major incidents in many locations around the city of Culiacán". Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said there would be a statement soon.

Ovidio Guzmán López, 28, is one of the four children of drug lord El Chapo and his second wife. This person is believed to have played an important role in the Sinaloa gang, since his father was arrested. El Chapo is said to have 4 wives and at least 6 other children.

El Chapo ran the Sinaloa cartel, one of Mexico's largest and most violent drug cartels, from 1989 to 2014. The drug lord was arrested in Mexico in 1993 and twice successfully escaped prison in 2001 and 2014. In 2016, Mexico arrested El Chapo and extradited to the US in January 2017.
