Outside of Hubei, the number of new infections tends to slow down and Chinese health officials consider it a sign that the disease is being effectively controlled.

The National Health Commission of China later said the country recorded 136 deaths and 1,749 new infections. Mainland China currently records 74,185 infections and 2,004 deaths.

Worldwide, 75,184 cases of nCoV infection and 2,009 people died from the disease, while 14,555 people recovered. Five deaths were recorded outside mainland China in Japan, Hong Kong, France, the Philippines and Taiwan.

The new figures were released hours after Russia announced it would ban all Chinese nationals from entering the country starting February 19 on the grounds that "the disease is getting worse in China".

The Covid-19 epidemic broke out in Wuhan from December 2019, spreading to 27 countries and territories. Hubei officials announced a change in the method of calculating the number of cases from February 13, in which cases with clinical manifestations or clinically diagnosed viral infections will be included in the new case data.

A spokesman for China's National Health Commission said on Feb. 16 that the figures showed the disease was under control. However, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that "it is impossible to predict which direction the disease will go".
