Hossein Fereydoun, younger brother of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, began serving a five-year sentence for corruption.

Hossein Fereidoun was transferred to Evin prison in Tehran to serve his sentence after a court ruling in early October, Iran's semi-official news agency Tasnim reported today.

Gholamhossein Esmaili, a spokesperson for the judiciary, announced on Oct. 1 that the initial 7-year sentence for Fereydoun was reduced to five years. This is a final verdict because Fereydoun has no appeal rights.

President Rouhani's younger brother and close aide have been convicted since early May for financial misconduct related to the Iran State Insurance Company's salary exaggeration scandal in 2016. in 2017 and released on bail after paying a guarantee of $ 15.3 million.

Fereidoun is not a surname with Rouhani because he changed his name a few decades ago. He served as Iran's ambassador to Malaysia in 1989-1997 and was appointed a special assistant to the President in 2013. Fereidoun was also involved in the delegation of Iran's Comprehensive Plan of Action with the powers.
