President Trump said that China is increasing its purchases of American goods with the aim of making him "happy".

"China is buying a lot of things and they are doing it to please me," he added.

Trump made his comment as US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He should have had discussions to evaluate the implementation of the first phase US-China trade deal yesterday.

Under the terms of the provisional trade agreement signed on January 15, high-level discussions between the two sides should be held every half year and August 15 marks the six months of the first phase agreement in effect.

The latest comments from President Trump are intended to allay fears that the US and China are gradually "further away" from trade.
