The White House owner served turkey, had dinner and photographed with US soldiers, then met Afghan President Ashraf Ghani during a visit lasting just over two hours at Bagram base.

Trump joked that he started the dinner with mashed potatoes but had to attend the next event without having time to eat the traditional turkey. "I should have eaten it first. Hope everyone has a great meal and can rest on this holiday," Trump told the soldiers.

The US president said Washington was resuming negotiations with the Taliban and plans to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan. "The Taliban want a deal, we are talking and insist on a ceasefire," Trump said, saying he wanted to reduce the number of US troops in Afghanistan from 13,000 to only 8,600, but gave no further details.

This is Trump's first appearance in Afghanistan, the second time he has visited US forces fighting abroad since coming to power. US presidential trips to war zones are often kept private to the last minute for security reasons.

The United States and the Taliban previously agreed to draft a peace agreement under which Washington would withdraw thousands of troops from Afghanistan. In return, the rebel group pledged not to turn the country into a base to deploy attacks on the United States and its allies. Trump planned to hold talks with the Taliban in the United States in September, but canceled after the militant group bombed 12 people, including one American soldier.
