The sanctions come after US intelligence accused Iran and Russia of meddling in the presidential election in this country.

The US Treasury Department said the Bayan Rasaneh Gostar Institute, the "front company" of the Quds task force, took the lead in intervention activities.

"The last time Bayan Rasaneh Gostar prepared a series of influential activities aimed at the American public ahead of the presidential election was this summer," the statement said.

The US Treasury Department did not publish details of the "election interference" activities of Iranian entities that have been sanctioned.

The sanctions prohibit American people and entities from doing business with Iranian organizations.

The Treasury Department imposed sanctions on five Iranian entities a day after National Intelligence Director John Ratcliffe accused the Middle East nation of being behind threatening emails to US voters forcing them to support President Doanld Trump.
