The Erdogan government argued the Aegean sea archipelago was given to Greece under the 1923 and 1947 treaties provided that the Athens Air Force the region, because they were near Turkey's mainland.

A NATO official said Turkey and Greece held a commitment to allies for decades and had a mechanism for resolving military conflicts to reconcile the two sides.
