Beijing extended the blockade that lasted more than a week to stop the second Covid-19 wave, after collecting about three million nCoV test samples.

Beijing officials at today's meeting said the blockade had been relaxed in seven apartment complexes since June 23, after residents were confirmed negative by nCoV.

Dozens of residential areas across Beijing have been ordered to blockade, while officials conducted extensive testing to find undetected nCoV infections.

Staff and visitors to Tan Phat Dia market, residents near the market, restaurant and delivery staff, are the main targets of the extensive testing campaign.

The government of the capital last week took the necessary steps to prevent the disease, including blockade of dozens of residential areas, the closure of many nearby schools and kindergartens, sterilizing hundreds of food markets and bringing four large districts.

Beijing officials also suspended elementary school students from returning to schools across the city and suspended all sports and group dining events.

The outbreak has made Beijing the most serious outbreak in China since February, forcing people who are preparing to return to normal life to face the stress they experienced four months ago.

Wu Chun-hue, China's leading epidemiologist, believes the new outbreak began in late May and the next three-day period, starting from June 16, is a decisive time for Beijing to stop it.

Covid-19 has appeared in more than 210 countries and territories, causing more than 9.7 million people to be infected and more than 490,000 people to die.
