Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen wrote a letter to restore his friendship with the United States, after receiving a letter from Trump.

Mr. Hun Sen thanked the US President for sending a letter guaranteeing that Washington did not pursue Cambodia's regime change on November 26. Diplomatic teams from both countries should work together to "restore confidence, restore the friendly relationship between our two countries and the people," Mr. Hun Sen wrote in his letter.

Cambodia, one of China's closest allies in Asia, has threatened to turn its back on both the United States and the European Union (EU) because they accuse the Cambodian government of political repression.

Less than four months ago, a Cambodian official said US diplomats "should pack up and leave" after the US embassy announced that Cambodia's 2018 election did not reflect the wishes of people.

Prime Minister Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party won all 125 parliament seats after the Supreme Court dismissed the main opposition party. The Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) is accused of plotting to seize power with American help. The leader of this party, Kem Sokha, was arrested for treason.
