Nakasone is known as a politician who plays an important role in building diplomatic relations with the United States and building trust with Chinese and Korean leaders.

Nakasone was first elected to the lower house of Japan in 1947. He has served as party secretary general, minister of international trade and industry.

After retiring in 2003, he actively participated in a campaign to amend the Constitution. "As someone who called for constitutional amendments throughout my political career, I hope the constitution will be amended soon," Nakasone once told an alliance about constitutional amendments when he was 100 years old.
