Judge Baraitser rejected Assange's argument that the proceedings were politically motivated, spurred on by US President Donald Trump, and that extradition posed a threat to reporters' work.

Assange, a 49-year-old Australian citizen, was indicted by the US under the Spy Act for publishing thousands of classified documents from the Pentagon in 2010, which mentioned US military activities in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The WikiLeaks owner has fled into the Ecuadorian embassy in London in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden for allegedly rapeing a woman in the country.
