Hong Kong residents flocked to buy the Apple Daily newspaper, after media magnate Jimmy Lai was arrested under security law.

Representatives of the Apple Daily newspaper said they increased the number of publications to 550,000 copies compared with the usual circulation of about 70,000 copies, due to the number of buyers surging on August 11.

Dozens of residents have lined up in Mong Kok and surrounding areas to buy the Apple Daily publication.

The front page of Apple Daily today posted a photo of Jimmy Lai's boss led by the police with the words "Apple will fight".

Immediately after media tycoon Jimmy Lai was arrested, Hong Kongers also increased their purchase of shares from his media company, causing the stock value to soar by more than 600%.

Hong Kong police arrested Jimmy Lai, 71 years old, on the morning of August 10 for collusion with foreign forces and fraud.

Beijing declared strong support for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region police when arresting Jimmy Lai, emphasizing that any collusion with outside forces poses a threat to national security.

The US and UK oppose the Hong Kong authorities to arrest Jimmy Lai and accuse Beijing of using security laws to prevent the opposition.
