The neighbors also took suspects Ajoy Rudrapal and his mother to the hospital. Here, the angry crowd attacked the Ajoy mother and son before he was arrested by the police.

The victim's family said their daughter knew Ajoy through social networks. The girl fled with Ajoy when he visited her home and proposed to her two months ago. The victim's family accuses the mother and son of Ajoy of imprisoning and torturing their daughter for the past two months for ransom. The police believe that the victim was raped by Ajoy and his friends at the same time.

According to the victim's mother, the family reported to the police shortly after the girl went missing. When the defendant asked for a second payment, they continued to ask for help from the police but were not responded. Ajoy asked the victim's family to pay 50,000 rupees (700 USD) in exchange for her freedom.

"On the evening of December 6, we gave Ajoy's mother 17,000 rupees (US $ 238) but she was unhappy and warned us to give enough money if we wanted to get our children back. We knew the address of the house and planned. But this morning, I was told my daughter was burned alive and hospitalized, "the victim's mother told reporters on December 7.

When the victim's family went to the hospital, their daughter was in critical condition. She said that she was tortured and raped for the past two months because her family did not pay the ransom. When Ajoy learned that he only received 17,000 rupees, he got angry and burned the girl alive in the night.

The number of reported rape cases increased by 60% to 40,000 between 2012-2016, according to government data, but many were not reported, especially in rural areas.
