The Philippines fired its ambassador to Brazil, Marichu Mauro, after she was found beating a maid at her residence in the capital city of Brasilia.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday said the country's former ambassador to Brazil Marichu Mauro was expelled from the diplomatic service after a scandal of violence against his maid late last year.

"There are rules to be followed. If you do not comply, you have to take the risk. When something goes wrong, the risk will come. This is a punishment," said President Duterte.

Ambassador Mauroe was recalled from Brasilia to Manila late last year, after the Brazilian TV channel GloboNews released a video showing she was beating a maid.

A series of videos of former ambassador Mauroe assaulting his maid, from March to October 2020, was later used as evidence in a complaint filed with the Philippine government.

The Philippine foreign ministry set up an investigative team to propose penalties to her.
