De Castro continued to walk, ignoring the girl until she caught up with him and they said something to each other. Dos Santos Leandro turned away from de Castro, seemingly leaving, but the man pulled a revolver and shot her.

De Castro then fled when a witness ran to the victim. Dos Santos Leandro was taken to a local hospital, but doctors determined she was dead. The police then arrested de Castro.

De Castro's lawyer said he was on his way to opening a store when Dos Santos Leandro was approached and thought the woman would try to rob her property and used the weapon. De Castro has been robbed several times in the area, so he has responded.

Dos Santos Leandro's older sister says her younger sister is home but likes to wander the streets.
