The South Korean president appoints supporters of inter-Korean relations to key positions to "revive" talks with North Korea.

President Moon Jae-in today appointed Suh Hoon, director of the National Intelligence Agency of Korea (NIS), as a national security adviser, and nominated Park Jie-won, former congressman and special envoy.

Moon also appointed Chung Eui-yong, the current national security advisor, and former chief of staff Im Jong-seok as special advisors on foreign policy and security.

The change in the Korean government comes as President Moon seeks to improve relations with North Korea, by restarting diplomatic exchanges and economic initiatives.

Despite three summits between President Moon and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and an agreement to reduce tensions, relations between the two countries have gradually cooled, since the U.S.-North Korea trade summit

The situation escalated dramatically after North Korea pulled a liaison office with South Korea in Kaesong city on June 16, allegedly because it no longer believed its neighbors could act as mediators.
