The US President telephoned his French counterpart to wish him a quick recovery after learning that the French leader had Covid-19.

In a phone call on December 17, US President Donald Trump wished French President Emmanuel Macron "quickly return to work", White House spokesman Judd Deere said.

"President Trump also sends his best wishes on a Merry Christmas to President Macron, his family and the people of France," said Deere.

Before Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin also sent greetings to the French President on his recovery.

Elysee Palace on December 17 announced that President Macron had a positive test result and would quarantine itself within 7 days, while continuing to work and participate in scheduled activities remotely.

Despite regularly wearing a mask and adhering to social spacing, Macron hosted or attended numerous meetings in the days prior to the positive results.

A source close to say that Macron "may have been infected during the EU summit in Brussels" last week.
