A group of human rights sued former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in Singaore because of the role of the civil war lasting more than two decades of Sri Lanka.

The International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP), based in South Africa, said that former President Rajapaksa seriously violated the Geneva Convention in the Civil War in Sri Lanka when he was the Defense Minister of the land.

ITJP thinks that based on the principle of general jurisdiction, the allegations of abuse can be prosecuted in Singapore, where Mr. Rajapaksa is residing after leaving Sri Lanka in the context of the country in crisis after months.

Mr. Rajapaksa has not commented on the above information.

Former President Rajapaksa submitted resignation via email from Singapore, one day after leaving the country on July 13.

The Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that former President Rajapaksa came to the island as an individual and did not apply for asylum.

Shubhankar Dam, a professor at the University of Portsmouth, UK, said that although Singapore's court could accept the crimes of war, genocide and torture, this jurisdiction was only used as a one.

The neutral view was not recorded in Singapore's foreign policy but in fact, Singapore has long pursued the neutral path, Mr. Dam said.

Sri Lanka ended the 25 -year civil war between the separatist faction of Tamil and Government forces in 2009. The human rights groups accused both sides of abuse in the war.

ItJP used two civil lawsuits against the former Sri Lanka, including a case in California in 2019, when he was at that time a US citizen.
