The authenticity and legality of the email needs to be checked, Yapa said.

If the email is accepted, Mr. Rajapaksa will be the first president to resign since Sri Lanka approved the presidential institution in 1978.

Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa spoke in the National Assembly in Colombo after being elected in January 2020.

The information about the resignation email released just a few hours after the plane carrying President Sri Lanka and his wife, Mrs. Ioma and the two defender landed at Singapore's Changi airport.

We confirmed that Mr. Rajapaksa was allowed to enter Singapore on a separate visit, the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

President Rajapaksa on the morning of July 13 fled Sri Lanka on a military plane to the Maldives.

After reaching the Maldives, Rajapaksa appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the president.

Thousands of Sri Lanka people pulled down the road to protest and flooded into the Prime Minister's office, asking both Rajapaksa and Wickremesinghe to resign, making President Wickremesinghe's right to order the Sri Lanka army to do everything necessary to recover order orderly

Mr. Wickremesinghe on July 9 announced his resignation to pave the way to establish a solidarity, but there was no sign that he would do this.

The protests in Sri Lanka have lasted for months and peaked in recent days.

The country lacks severe foreign exchange, causing the import of fuel, food and drugs to be limited.

President Sri Lanka ran abroad but refused to resign, making the country the country even more unpredictable in the middle of the crisis.

After the protesters flooded the mansion, President Sri Lanka tried to board the plane to UAE, USA and India but both failed.
