The President of Iran mocked the United States after the Security Council rejected a draft extension of the ban on arms sales to Tehran proposed by Washington.

"The US spent months preparing a resolution to strike Iran, but it received only one vote. Their plot has failed shamefully," Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said in a statement.

The United Nations Security Council on August 14 voted on a draft resolution extending arms embargo against Tehran proposed by Washington.

According to the draft resolution issued by the US, the arms embargo with Iran will be extended "until the Security Council decides otherwise".

White House Security Advisor Robert O'Brien said the British, French and German responses were "disappointing but not unexpected".

US President Donald Trump later warned Washington could extend the unilateral bill of lading ban against Tehran.

From 2006 to 2010, the Security Council passed three resolutions banning the export of technology related to nuclear weapons systems to Iran, banning Tehran from exporting weapons, as well as banning countries from selling weapons.

The term for the suspension of arms embargo against Iran was introduced by the United Nations Security Council in Resolution 2231, as part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was signed in 2015.

Arms sanctions with Iran will expire on October 18.
