The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and her escort warships entered the South China Sea on January 23 to "carry out routine operations".

"The warships group plans to carry out routine operations, including helicopter and jet aircraft operations, sea attack drills, tactical cohesion training between surface and air units.

The US Navy said this was a planned deployment of the 7th Fleet, aimed at "ensuring freedom at sea and building partnerships for maritime security".

This is the first US aircraft carrier deployment in the South China Sea since President Joe Biden took office on January 20.

The US State Department on Jan. 23 also called on Beijing to "stop exerting military, diplomatic and economic pressure on Taipei" after 13 Chinese military planes of all kinds overwhelmed Taiwan.

The US recently increased its freedom of navigation patrol in the South China Sea and persuaded its allies and partners to participate in order to reject China's unreasonable claims in this sea area.

In July, the carrier strike group Nimitz and Ronald Reagan conducted two joint exercises in the South China Sea.
