Transport Minister Elaine Chao and several White House advisers have resigned or been fired, in connection with the protesters' burst into Capitol Hill.

US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao announced his resignation on Jan. 7, becoming the first in the administration of President Donald Trump to leave office to protest against the White House boss's supporters' invasion of the parliament building.

"The violence has troubled me to the point of being ignored," Chao, wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, wrote in an email to his subordinates, adding that the resignation will take effect from

Deputy national security adviser Matt Pottinger, one of Trump's China policy-making, abruptly resigned on January 7.

An unnamed government official said many members of the National Security Council are also planning this.

This is considered a rare case when a government official publicly criticizes the incumbent president.

The White House also announced it would withdraw the nomination of Chad Wolf for the position of Homeland Security Secretary.

White House spokesman Judd Deere said the decision had nothing to do with Wolf's comments, insisting he would remain as acting minister and carry out his duties.
