Mr. Shmyhal did not specify the proposal but how to use lending phrases - rental shows that Kiev expects Washington to provide liquefied natural gas (LNG) under the program that is applied to weapons aid.

Ukraine Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal spoke at the Ukrainian reconstruction conference (URC2022) in Lugano, Switzerland, July 5.

Washington is supporting millions of dollars of weapons and ammunition for Ukraine under the Loan - Lending Program from World War II to be revived in April.

Shmyhal's proposal appeared in the context of Ukraine's Navtogaz state gas company that defaulted bonds and asked Kiev to receive the full responsibility of mobilizing the amount needed to import gas for the upcoming heating season.

However, former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko on July 25 accused Navtogaz embezzlement.

Ukraine is one of the largest energy consumption countries in Europe and is an important intermediary in the process of transporting gas from Russia to Europe.

In 2021, Ukraine consumed about 27.3 billion cubic meters of gas, of which 19.8 billion m3 itself, imported 2.6 billion m3 and 4.9 billion m3 from underground storage.

In the winter, Ukraine usually uses 140-150 million m3 of gas per day, of which 55 million m3 from imports and up to 90 million m3 are from underground storage.

US Senator Smith said the next 3-6 weeks were very important to Ukraine, before winter started, and need to support Kiev as much as possible.

Russian -European gas tensions started in the end of February, regarding the EU sanctions and increasing heat because Moscow responded.
