Senator Thune proposed amending the defense budget bill for the United States to buy a Turkish S-400 anti-aircraft missile complex.

Republican Sen. Whip John Thune submitted to the US Congress on June 25 a proposal to amend the Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) 2021, which proposed using the Army's procurement budget to buy

The proposal also applies to Turkey's S-400 purchase "not used for other purchases of weapons that the United States considers incompatible with NATO".

Senator Thune made a proposal in the context of Washington and Ankara disagreement because Turkey bought Russia's S-400 air defense missile complex instead of the US Patriot.

US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Jim Risch made a tougher proposal, allowing the administration of President Donald Trump to impose sanctions on Turkey under the U.S. Anti-rival Act through sanctions (CAATSA).

"I think that the US plan to buy S-400 from Turkey is a smart way to help President Recep Tayyip Erdogan escape the mire he brought himself in. We just want this complex to be taken out.

CAATSA stipulates that any country with transactions over $ 15 million with Russian defense contractors are subject to US sanctions.

The United States also pressured Turkey to destroy the S-400 complexes, but it vowed not to do so.
